Blockbuster Telugu filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli has been busy with the Oscars campaign of his latest film, RRR, in the U. S. and recently spoke about the films that have influenced him over the course of his career. During an interview with The New Yorker, the Baahubali director was asked to recommend 5 Indian films for Americans to not miss watching. Rajamouli's movie suggestions included K Viswanath's Sankarabharanam (1980), Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen (1995), Rajkumar Hirani's Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday (2007), and Vetri Maaran's Aadukalam (2011).

SS Rajamouli's recommendations have since received a huge response from fans of the films over the week, with the team of Aadukalam issuing a statement on Friday, February 24. Producer-director S. Kathiresan's Five Star Films took to social media to extend their gratitude to the hit Telugu director for holding their film in high esteem, while also thanking him for recommending their venture to the world. They wrote on Twitter, "Our hearts are gladdened to have one of our country's finest filmmaker appreciating our project 'Aadukalam'. Thank you Shri S. S. Aadukalam won six awards at the 58th National Film Awards ceremony in categories namely Best Direction (Vetrimaaran), Best Actor (Dhanush), Best Screenplay (Original) (Vetrimaaran), Best Editing (Kishore Te) and Best Choreography (Dinesh Kumar) along with a Special Jury Award being presented to actor V. I. S Jayapalan, who played the role of Periyasamy aka. Pettaikaran. The film earned Dhanush his first National Award and was also Taapsee Pannu's debut in Tamil cinema, while also featuring additional screenplay by Vikram Sugumaran and chart-topping songs and a powerful background score composed by music by G. V. Prakash Kumar.
