The box office statements of Tamil films of 2022 suggest they are not only received well in the nation by also world wide. Following it, many announcements of new releases this year excited fans even before 2023 the year began. Varisu and Thuivu, released in January, set a good start for this year with distributors reporting huge numbers. Summer releases are something that's looked forward to as schools and colleges close for summer and families look gather to watch movies in theatres.. Look ahead to know some of the anticipated summer releases that are planned:
- Border
Following the success of Kuttram 23, the director-actor duo teamed up for the film Border. It was scheduled to release last October but was delayed. Arun Vijay takes up the role of a military officer in the film set around an anti-terrorist operation. The film has Regina Cassandra, Stefy Patel, Bagavathi Perumal in supporting roles. The film is set to hit the theatres on 24th Februrary.
- Dasara
Dasara is a telugu launguage film that is set to release in five languages. The film has famous actors Nani and Keerthy Suresh playing lead roles. Samuthirakani, Deekshith Shetty, Shine Tom Chacko and Sasikumar are casted in the film directed by Srikanth Odela. Santhosh Narayan has composed scores for the film that’s produced under the SLV Cinemas banner. As Nani has become a famous in Tamil Nadu after Naan ee film, the project created excitement and is set to released on march 30th.
- Pathu Thala
Silamabarasan TR’s next film is a remake of the Mega-hit Kannada film Mufti. The first single from the movie, sung and composed by AR Rahman, was released recently and became a chart topper instantly. The film has created a massive anticipation as it comes after STR's hit Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu. Gautham Karthik, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Teejay Arunachalam, Kalaiarasan and Redin kingley are playing character role in the film that's set to release on march 30.
- Viduthalai
Vetrimaaran, who is known for making commecial hit and critically acclaimed movies, has directed Viduthalai that is based on a short story by jayamohan. The movie sparked huge expectation with fans and movie buffs alike and has been in making for a long time. Comedian and character artist Soori has played lead as a cop. The first part the film will be releases on march 31, while it’s first single sung by Dhanush and composed by maestro Ilayaraja was release recently.
Rudhran is a commercial entertainer starring Raghava Lawrence and Priya Bhavani Shankar in lead roles. The drama was directed by S Kathireshan and music by GV Prakash. The film was earlier schedules to release in Christmas 2022 but was postponed and is set to release for Tamil New Year due to extensive VFX. The film is set to release in four languages on April 14.
- Pichaikkaran 2
Pichaikkaran 2 is a sequel to the blockbuster hit film Pichaikkaran that has Vijay Antony playing the lead. The first four minutes of the film was official released as a sneak peek by the project’s makers two weeks back. Vijay antony is making a directorial debut with the film and the sneak peek revealed brain transplantation could be the concept of the film. The movie also stars Kavya Thapar, Radha Ravi, Y G Mahendran, Mansoor Ali Khan and is expected to be released on April 14.
- Ponniyin Selvan 2.
Last year’s largest blockbuster Ponniyin Selvan’s sequel Ponniyin Selvan 2 is set to hit the threatres on April 28. The movie has one of the biggest star cast of Tamil film industry with Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi playing important roles in Mani Rathnam’s magnum opus. Songs, teaser and trailer from the film are expected to be announced soon.
- Singapore Saloon.
RJ Balaji’s second release for the year after the hit Run Baby Run has created anticipation among people. Under Vels Production banner, the film is directed by Gokul . RJ Balaji has made cautious career choices and delivered hit film one after another that has sparked viewers’ aniticpation for the film set to release in April.
- Shaakuntalam
Samantha is the leading lady of the telugu-language mythological drama Shaakuntalam. The project sparked excitement since announcement. The film is mount on a massive budget and was shot with 3D technology. The film is to be released on April 14 and is set to release in five languagues including Tamil.
- Iraivan.
Jayam Ravi’s second film in the list is directed by Ahamed. It has Thani Oruvan pair Jayam ravi and Nayanthara uniting again. The director is back with the film after the hit of Manithan starring Udayanithi Stalin. Netflix bagged the OTT streaming rights for the film that’s expected to hit the theatres in May.
- Japan.
The first look of Japan created a massive anticipation among fans and movie buffs as the project directed by Gipsy fame Rajamurugan shows actor Karthi in a fresh look. Karthi is known for taking up experimental plots right from his debut. The film is set to release on may.
- Maaveeran.
Director Madonne Ashwin created a buzz with his debut film Mandela and his second venture Maaveeran starring Sivakaarthikeyan became a topic of discussion since announcement. Sivakathikeyan adorns a new look for the film in which he plays the role of a comic book artist. The first single from the movie was released last week and the film is expected to be released in May.
- Agilan
The trailer of the Jayam Ravi and priya Bhavani Shankar starrer turned heads. The plot of the action film Agilan seems to revolve around harbour. It's directed by N Kalayanakrishnan and was scheduled to be released in October. The film was then postponed and is set to release this March.
