Owing to the recent surge in the Covid 19 cases and Omicron cases, the Tamil Nadu Government released a new set of guidelines to be followed in the state. When many of them anticipated the theatres in Tamil Nadu to be closed because of the increase in cases, the Government's GO confirmed that no theatres shall shut down. The theatres have been ordered to function with 50% occupancy which has already been in practice from the beginning of this year. However, the night curfew will continue to be in effect and as a result, the evening show will be the last show for the day.

The Sunday lockdown has been announced only on January 16. Now that the theatres are allowed to function with the safety guidelines in place, this development will come as a relief for all the theatre exhibitors and film producers. Though mega biggies like RRR, Radhe Shyam, and Valimai, have backed out of the Pongal release plans, small scale films like Enna Solla Pogirai, Naai Sekar, Kombu Vatcha Singamda, Carbon, etc. are on track for their release for the festive occasion and this new order from the Government will be happy news for them. The new set of guidelines will be in effect until the end of this month - January 31.

So, the Pongal releases will not have any major problem as the theatres are not going to be shut down. According to sources, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin did not want any sector to be majorly affected by the lockdown and that is said to be one of the reasons why the cinema industry and many other industries have been allowed to function with minimal occupancy and safety protocols. Let us hope to overcome the third wave of Covid 19 very soon, so that our lives will return to normalcy.
