The talk of the town is 'Thalapathy' Vijay's Varisu and the film coming out ahead of the Pongal festivities on January 11 is set for a massive opening in cinemas everywhere. The captain of the ship, Telugu filmmaker Vamshi Paidipally, has been at the center of attention ever since the film went on floors back in April last year, and all sights are on what he's come up with for the audiences next. With Vijay's fans gearing up for a memorable start to 2023, director Vamshi recently sat down for a candid conversation with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to talk about Varisu and the reason to bring the film out for Pongal.

Vamshi explained, "Our film is the right kind of film for Pongal. The nature of the film is very good for the festival. It has a festival mood to it as it is a celebration of human emotions. It's a celebration of family. It's a celebration of life. There's so much to it where there are characters that evolve from somewhere to somewhere. There's so much wrapped up in one package. And, I think it is right to deliver a package at the right time. If you need to deliver a gift at Christmas, you deliver it because it has a certain impact. So, I think that's why it's important that we deliver this film for Pongal. I think, in a commercial film, you cannot define a genre because we have all the genres put into it. But, on the baseline, it is a family kind of genre. We thought that Pongal will be a festive mode. It'll be like people thronging the theatres with their families. I like to give hope through a film. That is my motive. You might have seen Thozha. Or, you might have seen Maharshi. When we write a story, we try ti see what are we trying to tell with this story because when you have a super duper star like 'Thalapathy' Vijay sir, when you kind of tell something to him, I think it'll reach a large section of people. Because I remember Suriya sir called me after watching Maharshi and he said a beautiful thing. He said, 'You know what you've done Vamshi? People might go to school and there are some people who go to school who might not listen. But, when mediums like this come and tell people through a superstar, that reach is huge.' Because when we got into weekend agriculture in Maharshi, the way it was adopted, at that point in time, even if 10 schools adopt this, then we're a winner. There are so many schools that have adopted this like weekend agriculture and sending kids to make these classes where so many schools called us. And, that's why we're trying to do something through this film. It's like creating hope. So, when you know you want to create that hope and when you want to sell that hope, you have to sell it at the right point also."
