AK Rao's body was first spotted by a loco pilot, who immediately alerted the station master and authorities at the Yelahanka railway station, reports say. Singer Harini's sister had reportedly told officials that she last spoke to her father on November 19. Reports further state he had taken a cab from his hotel on November 21, with his body being seen on the railway track the next day. There were injuries on AK Rao's forehead, including cuts on his wrist and neck, with a knife, blade and a pair of scissors discovered at the scene of the incident. Rao's family has filed a police complaint and have raised suspicion that he was murdered.

According to a report in TNIE, a cheating case amounting to Rs 2 crore and involving Rao’s name was earlier filed at the Suddaguntepalya police in Bengaluru. It is stated that a businessman had accused three persons who recommended him to invest Rs 2 crore in a company, while he also claimed that Rao and the trio were known to each other and helped them financially. The police reportedly suspect that the cause of Rao's death could be due to a financial fall out.
