Silambarasan TR's latest release Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is the talk of the town and has taken a stunning opening in theatres everywhere. The gangster film is the actor's third collaboration with blockbuster director Gautham Vasudev Menon after their Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) and Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (2016). In that light, Simbu recently sat down for an exclusive interview with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, and opened up about working together with GVM over the years, including revealing why he turned down a film titled Sura and opted to do Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa instead.

Speaking about how Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa came to be, STR said, "When we were doing VTV, Silambattam was the film, which had been released before. At that time, Gautham wanted to do an action film titled Sura with me. But, I was more of the 'B' and 'C' center hero and I wanted an 'A' center audience next as only Manmadhan had that aspect. I didn't have a big female fan following then. So, I told Gautham about doing a love story and he said I'd have no big role in the story (Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa). I told him that it was okay and was keen on doing only this film. He said the title of the film is Jessie and it's a heroine-oriented story. The heroine will have more importance in the film. If you watch VTV, the film will be more about the girl only as the boy is a little bit dummy. But, once I came into the picture, that whole equation changed and it became an equally balanced story."

Simbu's third-time outing with Gautham Menon in Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu has turned out to be yet another film the duo will cherish along with fans, who have been showering them with praises after its release earlier this week. Produced by Dr. Ishari K. Ganesh's Vels Film International banner, the film also marks the duo's third-time collaboration with Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman and all sights are now set on Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu 2, which fans await next to roll into production soon.
