Blockbuster Tamil film director Selvaraghavan's Naane Varuvean starring Dhanush released worldwide on September 29 and the reviews for the horror action thriller have so far been mixed. Produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu's V Creations banner, the film has the two-time National Award-winning actor playing dual roles, Prabhu and Kathir, and features music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Post the release of Naane Varuvean, fans have been divided about the film in their reviews with many stating that it is a good comeback for Selvaraghavan, while others have claimed that his latest work is not up to the mark as many of his memorable past ventures.

Responding to the mixed reviews for Naane Varuvean, Selvaraghavan said, "If you look at any film that has been released, the audience cannot or will not say that they liked it 100 percent. That is a part of life and a part of cinema. You shouldn't research too much into what is there because no film has come out in the world that will satisfy anyone 100 percent. There will be millions of people who will not like Titanic and raise questions about the probability of the hero’s fight for survival in the cold water for such a long time, including the logic behind the story. If we begin to talk, we can keep on going. What the majority is, that should be the focus. A majority of the people like the film and we should carry on with our work next."

Naane Varuvean is the sixth film Selvaraghavan and Dhanush have worked on together after Kaadhal Kondein (2003), Pudhupettai (2006), and Mayakkam Enna (2011), while the filmmaker had written only the story for Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002) and Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008). It is to be noted that Selvaraghavan appears in a cameo in Naane Varuvean, which also stars Indhuja Ravichandran and Swedish-Greek actress Elli AvrRam as the female leads, while veteran actor Prabhu and comedian Yogi Babu play supporting roles.
