Pa. Ranjith has garnered a huge following among Tamil cinema fans over the years with his directorial features, which also included his Sarpatta Parambarai released earlier this year receiving a sensational response from fans and critics. Ranjith has also made a transition to producing films under his Neelam Productions banner and bankrolled Pariyerum Perumal (2018) and Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu (2019), which earned positive feedback. In that light, the next film coming out under the Neelam Productions banner is the cop action drama Writer starring National Award-winning actor Samuthirakani in the lead role and has been directed by newcomer Franklin Jacob.
Announced to hit screens on December 24 ahead of the Christmas festivities, the much-awaited Writer trailer has been released on Wednesday and has Samuthirakani playing the role of a police writer. The trailer shows the day-to-day activities of Samuthirakani as a writer in the police station before he is given a new set of tasks as he nears his retirement. A number of conflicts are teased in the Writer trailer, including the dissatisfaction towards the wrongdoings by the police department that Samuthirakani opposes that lead to a series of life-altering events.
Writer has Samuthirakani sharing screen space with actress Ineya, who as well is playing the role of a cop. Popular VJ and host Maheswari is the female lead, with the film's supporting cast also featuring Dileeban, Harikrishnan Anbudurai, Subramaniam Shiva, G.M Sundhar, Lizzie Antony, Kavitha Bharathy, Kavin Jay Babu among others. Pa. Ranjith has produced Writer under his Neelam Productions in association with Golden Ratio Films, Little Red Car Films and Jetty Productions banners, with the film's music composed by 96 fame Govind Vasantha, while the cinematography has been handled by Pratheep Kaliraja and editing done by Manigandan Sivakumar.
