Bakkiyaraj tied the knot with his wife Asha on October 26, 2020, in the presence of family members, close friends, and Tamil cinema personalities among whom also included actor-producer Sivakarthikeyan. On the occasion of his first wedding anniversary last year, the hit director posted pictures of himself with his wife on social media along with a special message that read: "Happy Anniversary, my love ❤️You have made our home and our lives beautiful"

Bakkiyaraj Kannan made his directorial debut in 2016 with Remo starring Sivakarthikeyan and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles and featured chart-buster music by Anirudh Ravichander. Produced by R. D. Raja's 24AM Studios banner, the rom-com was a smash hit at the box office, with the filmmaker receiving tremendous praise from fans and critics for delivering a solid family entertainer. A former associate of blockbuster director Atlee, Bakkiyaraj's second film, Sulthan, came out in April 2021, under the Dream Warrior Pictures banner and became a success, with leading Tamil actor Karthi and national sensation Rashmika Mandanna forming the lead pair. Post the action film’s theatrical release, Sulthan garnered good viewership a month later after its premiere on Disney+ Hotstar. Regarding his upcoming film, Bakkiyaraj is said to be working on a new script, which is expected to be bigger than his previous ventures, with an official announcement yet to be made.
