Created by Reshma Ghatala and jointly directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and Prasath Murugesan, the first season of Queen premiered on the MX Player streaming platform in late 2019 and turned out to be a huge success. The first season consisted of 11 episodes and saw actresses Anikha Surendran and Anjana Jayaprakash portray the younger versions of the fictional character Shakthi Sheshadri, who is based on Jayalalithaa, with the supporting cast featuring Indrajith Sukumaran, Vamsi Krishna, Tulasi, Sonia Agarwal, Lillete Dubey among others. Based on Anita Sivakumaran's novel of the same name, Queen gave a glimpse into the life and evolution of Sheshadri, including her journey from cinema to politics.

Post the success of the first season, Gautham Menon had revealed in April 2020 that the second season of Queen had officially been renewed. While the first season revolved around the journey of the Shakthi Sheshadri becoming a big name in cinema, the show ended on a cliffhanger note with Ramya Krishnan looking into the future in politics. As of now, there is no premiere date for Queen season 2 and we can expect an official announcement in the days going forward as production gains further speed.
