Popular Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu, who had been out on bail in the Republic Day violence case last January, died in a tragic road accident on Tuesday night. The accident took place on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway bypassing Delhi. Television visuals showed Sidhu's white Mahindra Scorpio rammed into the rear of a trailer truck, with the SUV's driver side getting jammed by its impact. The actor had been traveling from Delhi to Bhatinda in Punjab when his vehicle smashed into the truck at around 9.30 p.m., the police officials said.

Sidhu's body was handed over to his family members after a post mortem was conducted at the local civil hospital. The actor's mortal remains were cremated in Ludhiana village in Punjab on Wednesday evening. A case has been registered by the Haryana Police against the truck driver involved in the accident which resulted in the actor's death. Sidhu hit the headlines in January last year after he participated in the farmers' protests against the Centre's three farm laws near the borders in Delhi. He had participated in the farmers' agitation against the Centre's three agriculture laws, which were later withdrawn last November. The actor-turned-activist was arrested as the key conspirator of the violence at Red Fort on Republic Day during the farmers' tractor rally against the Centre's initiative to introduce the farm laws. He was released on bail after being in jail for over two months.

Deep Sidhu's girlfriend actress Reena Rai took to social media to express her condolences over his tragic demise. Sharing photos of their good times together, she wrote, "I’m broken I’m dead inside please come back to your soulmate which you promised me that you won’t leave me in any lifetime I love you my Jaan my soul boy you are my heart beat.
