Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's most ambitious film to date, the highly-anticipated Ponniyin Selvan: I, based on legendary Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's acclaimed novel of the same name, is now the first Tamil film to come out in IMAX after being shot in the said format. The news announced on Tuesday, August 16, by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies, also included a special IMAX release poster featuring 'Chiyaan' Vikram atop an elephant in one among the many imposing moments from the film, which will be released worldwide on September 30. Sharing the massive news along with the Ponniyin Selvan IMAX poster on social media, the makers wrote, "Grand gets Grander! Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies are leaving no stone unturned in securing the biggest release for Ponniyin Selvan and the IMAX factor will only enhance the viewing experience on the big screen. Considering the film has been made on an impressive scale and scope, while also featuring massive war sequences, the announcement of an IMAX release will add to the excitement for fans. Ponniyin Selvan: I will be releasing in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages and has the Mani Ratnam-A. R. Rahman combo power the film with their collaboration. The first single from the film titled 'Ponni Nadhi' featured on Karthi's character Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyadevan was released recently to a rousing response and became a chart-buster in no time. The full Ponniyin Selvan: 1 album is expected to be released soon along with the film's trailer, which fans expect to be a notch above the intriguing and action-packed teaser.
Mani Ratnam has fulfilled his dream of making Ponniyin Selvan and the epic will be coming out in two installments. Apart from Karthi as Vanthiyadevan and Vikram as Aditya Karikalan, the film also includes Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Trisha as Ilaiya Piratti Kundavai, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini in the lead roles.
