Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Pa. Ranjith has announced his next film, a biopic on the Jharkhand tribal leader, Birsa Munda, under Shareen Mantri and Kishor Arora's Namah Pictures banner and will incidentally also mark his Bollywood debut. Announced to begin rolling by the end of the year, the makers on Friday were quoted as saying by PTI, "The action drama will be shot extensively at hitherto unseen locations and bring to the big screen verdant landscapes and deep jungles as never seen before." The upcoming film will bring to light the life of Birsa Munda, who stood up for the people against British colonial oppressors in the 19th century.

Speaking about Birsa, director Pa. Ranjith said, "I could not have chosen a better project for my first Hindi film. The process of scripting and research behind the film has been a very enriching process." He added, "I have gained inspiration from Birsa's life and his conviction for freedom and autonomy. Would also like to thank the producers for their patience during the process of research and scripting." Producer Shareen Mantri too said, "We, at Namah Pictures, love to tell stories that engage, entertain, and inspire. The team has undergone intense research for the film and we aim to bring alive Birsa's story on a colossal scale." Likewise, producer Kishor Arora added, "Birsa Munda's story of revolution personifies courage in every way. We are thrilled to collaborate with Ranjith for his Bollywood debut as a director and cannot wait for the film to go on floors this year."

Director Pa. Ranjith has become a prominent name in Tamil cinema after films like Attakathi, Madras, including Kabali and Kaala with 'Superstar' Rajinikanth and more recently the critically-acclaimed Sarpatta Parambarai, which received a thunderous response after its OTT release on Amazon Prime Video. He recently concluded filming his Natchathiram Nagargirathu starring Kalidas Jayaram and Dushara Vijayan in the lead roles and will soon begin work on Chiyaan 61 with National Award-winning Tamil actor Vikram under the Studio Green banner. Birsa, which was initially said to be in development in 2018 with the same team, is expected to go on floors after Ranjith completes his work on Vikram's Chiyaan 61
