Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal is right around the corner and we cannot wait to catch it on the big screen! The love triangle between Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu has caught the attention of many with their performances and with the film's conceptualization. But this is not the first time the concept has been done in Tamil cinema. It is a territory that has already been explored before and has also tasted success with it. A proven hit material. So before the release of Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, let us check out some older films that dealt with the concept of the love triangle:

1. MINNALE:  

The movie revolves around a girl who is torn between the man she is engaged to and an obsessive man who cons her into falling in love with him. Who she chooses by the end forms the crux of the movie. This Gautham Vasudev Menon directorial stars Reema Sen, Madhavan, and Abbas. 

2. MINSARA KANAVU: 

Directed and co-written by Rajiv Menon, this romantic drama stars Arvind Swami, Prabhu Deva, and Kajol who made her Tamil debut with this. The film tells the story of Thomas who has loved Priya ever since their high school days but is afraid to confess his feeling to her. Therefore, he resorts to his friend Deva, to try and convince Priya. However, a predicament arises when Priya ends up falling in love with Deva. What will transpire at the end?

3. KADHAL DESAM: 

Karthik, an orphan and captain of his college football team, befriends Arun, a rich boy from the rival club after he saves his life. But problems arise when they both end up falling for the same girl. This romantic film is written and directed by Kathir. It starred Vineeth, Abbas, and Tabu as the characters of the love triangle. 

4. IYARKAI:

The film's story is set against the backdrop of the port town Rameswaram and revolves around a young woman and two men who love her. Marudhu is a sailor who falls in love with Nancy, a fruit vendor. However, she is unsure of what to do as she waits for the captain who had promised that he would return and marry her causing turmoil. 

5. KANDA NAAL MUDHAL:

This romantic comedy film was written and directed by debutant Priya.V and starred Prasanna, Laila, and Karthik Kumar in the lead roles. The film is about Ramya and Krishna who end up catching each other's throat whenever they cross paths. Krishna's friend Aravind's parents arrange his marriage with Ramya. Love finds a way and blooms between Ramya and Krishna because of certain circumstances. Who will end up marrying Ramya - Aravind or Krishna?

6. HEY SINAMIKA: 

Weather scientist Mouna falls in love with quirky and loving Yaazhan, but their relationship takes an unexpected turn when psychologist Dr Malarvizhi arrives in town. This romantic drama film is directed by acclaimed dance choreographer Brinda in her directorial debut and stars Dulquer Salmaan, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Aggarwal.

7. YAARADI NEE MOHINI: 

This Tamil romantic comedy directed by Mithran Jawahar stars Dhanush, Nayanthara and Karthik Kumar in the lead roles. The film follows Vasu who falls in love with Keerthi, but when he expresses his feelings to her, she turns him down saying her marriage has already been arranged. She eventually falls in love with Vasu who later learns that she is set to marry his close friend Cheenu which causes a dilemma.

8. SHAHJAHAN: 

Shahjahan is about a man, Ashok, who helps out two lovers but later comes to realize that he has been helping his friend Raja to fall in love with the girl that he is in love with. How will Ashok take this and what will be the outcome? Starring Thalapathy Vijay, Krishna and Richa Pallod in the lead, the film is both written and directed by Ravi.

9. NINAITHEN VANDHAI: 

This 1998 romantic drama directed by K. Selva Bharathy stars Thalapathy Vijay, Rambha and Devayani in lead roles. The film follows Gokulan who sees a woman in his dream, Swapna and is determined to find her. But his father gets him engaged to another woman, Savithri, before he could find the love of his life. He later meets Swapna and the two fall in love with each other but complications arise when it is revealed that Savithrii and Swapna are both sisters. 

10. UNNAI NINAITHU: 

When Nirmala finds a better match, she leaves her lover Suriya. A heartbroken Suriya moves on and meets Radha who values his love. However, when Nirmala comes back, Suriya finds himself in a difficult situation. The film starring Suriya, Laila, and Sneha in the lead is written and directed by Vikraman. 

11. MOUNAM PESIYADHE: 

Written and directed by Ameer in his directorial debut, this romantic drama stars Suriya, Trisha in the lead roles, with Laila appearing in a cameo. The film follows Goutham who meets Sandhya (Trisha) through his close friend. He falls in love after getting calls and gifts assuming it is from her. It is later revealed that the gifts he received were actually sent by Laila and not Trisha. It was Laila who has been engaging in these activities with him since the beginning.
