Vetrimaaran is not one to beat himself up over the success and failure of the work of his assistants . “A captain can never make a good team, but a good team can make a good captain. These guys helped me make my film. So today i am happy that they are going out there and making their own movies . three of them have already released their films, and the others are at work. I just wish them the best ,” he says. Many of Vetrimaaran's assistants have ventured out on their own. So is it the beginning of Vetrimaaran school of cinema... "That can never be. I believe there are only three schools of thought as far as Tamil cinema goes: the K Balachander school, the Bharathiraja school and the Balumahendra school. The guys who work with me, may never meet or interact with Balumahendra sir, but indirectly I am passing on the knowledge that I gained from him. All of us who worked with Balumahendra sir, lived and breathed cinema the way he taught it to us. We spent  years gleaning knowledge from him. He taught us to distinguish between good cinema and bad cinema, and he even taught us how to make movies that sell. I don’t see myself as a teacher. I am still learning. Just because I have made two films, it does not mean I know it all. I still find myself going to my Guru when I am in doubt and need some clarity. These guys are my friends, not my students," the modest director said in an exclusive interview.
