Ponniyin Selvan: I is an upcoming Tamil epic period action film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. Produced by Lyca Productions and by Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner of Madras Talkies, it is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. 

The makers of the film has come forward to announce that Sree Gokulam Gopalan's Gokulam Movies have acquired the distribution rights of the film in the state of Kerala. The team of Lyca Productions made this announcement official by taking to their Twitter handle and stating the same. The makers of the film have been creating major hype around the film by dropping individual character posters and songs which have all been very well received by the fans as well as the general audience who are more than keen on catching the film on the big screen. 

The film stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.

Ponniyin Selvan was originally intended to be a stand-alone film but it was later split into two parts. The first part, PS-I is scheduled to have a worldwide theatrical release on 30 September 2022 in both the standard format as well as in IMAX format.
