Based on S. Hussain Zaidi's book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai', ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali presents us with his vision of Gangubai Kathiawadi and takes it to the next level with the grand scale of the film. The trailer for the biographical crime drama film was released on Friday (January 4) and it is spectacular. From the trailer, Gangubai as a character being portrayed by Alia Bhatt appeals to us as a strong, fierce, diligent, steadfast, and tenacious woman. It presents us her compelling story and journey from a being simple girl of Kamathipura in Bombay to fighting elections.

We only get glimpses, bits, and pieces of her life and that adds to the intrigue of the main plot of the film. It looks like the film is set in the 1960s and gives us a little sneak peek of the glamorous sets and dialogues that Bhansali is best known for. The trailer also packs in some humor in a few places, which is not a common factor compared to his previous films. Gangubai Kathiawadi will premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, which is being held from February 10-20.

The upcoming film is all set to release in theatres worldwide on February 25, with Alia Bhatt as the titular character looking ready to reign supreme in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest visual treat. Joining the cast are Jim Sarbh, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, and Seema Pahwa, who are to play pivotal roles in the film, which has a story and screenplay written by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has also done editing and produced it along with Jayantilal Gada. Gangubai Kathiawadi will also feature National Award-winning Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn in a pivotal role and his casting in the film is an additional USP for fans to get excited. The film is incidentally his reunion with Sanjay Leela Bhansali after two decades when they last worked together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999.
