Celebrated Bengali actor Abhishek Chatterjee passed away due to a massive cardiac arrest on Thursday in Kolkata, news agency PTI has quoted his family members as saying. He was 58. According to reports, the actor had complained to his family members on Wednesday that he was experiencing uneasiness in his stomach while he was shooting for a reality TV show after which he was administered saline at his residence at Prince Anwar Shah Road. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences on Twitter and wrote, "Sad to know of the untimely demise of our young actor Abhishek Chatterjee . Abhishek was talented and versatile in his performances, and we shall miss him. It is a great loss for TV serials and our film industry. My condolences to his family and friends."

Abhishek Chatterjee rose to the limelight in the Bengali film industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He began his cinema journey with the 1986 film Path Bhola under Tarun Majumdar's direction after which he landed roles in several blockbuster Bengali ventures. Some of his most notable film roles include Bariwali and Dahan, which were directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh. Likewise, a few other commercial successes for Chatterjee include films like Sangharsho, Lathi, and Bhai Amar Bhai. He later made a shift to the traditional yatra circuit and became a popular name among the rural masses. The actor made a return to the small screen a few years back and appeared on the smash hit serial Kharkuto, while also recently shooting the Jeet-hosted reality show called Ismart Jodi. Chatterjee had collaborated with several reputed actors during the course of his 35-year career, including Utpal Dutt, Sandhya Roy and Prosenjit Chatterjee to name a notable few.
