Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker A. R. Murugadoss' new film titled August 16 1947 is his next big production venture and has been directed by his former long-time associate NS Ponkumar. The upcoming period venture is set in the pre-Independence era and stars Gautham Karthik in the lead role and has newcomer Revathy as the female lead, with Cooku with Comali fame Pugazh playing a crucial role. Produced under the A. R. Murugadoss Productions in association with Om Prakash Bhatt's Purple Bull Entertainment and Narsiram Choudhary’s God Bless Entertainment banners, the August 16 1947 official teaser has been released by actor Silambarasan TR on Monday, August 15, on the special occasion of India celebrating its 75th Independence Day.

The August 16 1947 teaser starts off with a village in Tamil Nadu where Pugazh is seen reading out the news of India's prospects of getting independence from British rule. The action then shifts to an elderly man explaining how Mahatma Gandhi has been giving the British government a tough fight before the film's hero Gautham Karthik is introduced as one of the villagers, who is smitten by debutant actress Revathy. We then see various moments from the film where the villagers face violent action for their defiance against the British, while Gautham Karthik is seen standing up for his people. Shot in locations across Tamil Nadu, the August 16 1947 teaser predominantly shows the struggles of the villagers against their oppressors, who adhere to bringing order through violence.

August 16 1947 is AR Murugadoss’ sixth production venture after he earlier produced films like Engaeyum Eppothum (2011), Vathikuchi (2013), Raja Rani (2013), Maan Karate (2014), and 10 Endrathukulla (2015). Announced for a grand release soon, the film has a highly-talented technical team on board featuring the likes of music director Sean Roldan, cinematographer Selvakumar SK, editor Sudharsan R, followed by art direction by T Santhanam, costume design by Perumal Selvam, and makeup done Abdul Razack. On the directorial front, although A. R. Murugadoss is yet to announce his next, there were reports a while back stating that he has been working on a fantasy subject script, with an official confirmation still being awaited.
