Article 15 director anubhav sinha explains why he filmed bheed movie in black and white - Tamil Movie Cinema News

Hindi filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, who is best known for films like Ra.One, Mulk, Article 15, and Thappad, to name a notable few, is out with his next, Bheed, which is set during the events of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown in India. Starring  Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Dia Mirza, Ashutosh Rana, Pankaj Kapur and Kritika Kamra in the lead roles, the social drama film released on in theatres on March 24 and made in black and white has garnered the filmmaker immense critical acclaim once again. With Bheed out in theatres now and also being widely debated for various reasons, Anubhav Sinha recently sat down with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, and discussed in detail about the film being made in black and white.

Speaking about the decision to opt for a black and white color tone for Bheed, Anubhav Sinha stated, "So, when we started screening the film, pre-release, a lot of people read my scripts, they write notes and emails to me and similarly I showed the film to people before the release. A lot of people give their opinions. So, there were two things I was very worried about, and I would wait for those comments. And, one being, black and white. And, the other being, reliving the tragedy so soon. And, I thought people will say something on those lines." He goes on to explain how he was surprised that a majority of them did not say anything about Bheed being made in black and white and shared their reactions. He revealed that the people who watched the film had beautiful things to say about it being made in black, while adding that only a minuscule percentage would discuss about the color tone. He says, "It didn't occur to me that I made a mistake. No, I'm very, very convinced and proud, and I haven't had this reaction from the people either and not from the film critics. I don't know about the people in the theatres."

Explaining how he felt Bheed would appeal to the current generation, considering youngsters nowadays have not been exposed to black and white films, Anubhav Sinha said, "So, I remember my son is 21. And, he was 20-ish when I took this decision. And, his friends were over that night and I asked them. I thought this would be a good place to ask this question and one of them was a girl from Bangalore who said, 'I don't watch Hindi films, but this one I'll watch.' So, I thought, maybe they'll find something new in it and I even got a tick mark from youngsters, which was just six of them, but yeah."
