Leading on-demand subscription video and over-the-top streaming player Amazon Prime has announced that it will be increasing the price of its plans in India by fifty percent. Amazon confirmed in an official statement on Thursday, which revealed that the price of the monthly, quarterly, and yearly plans will be increased in India. According to the statement, the monthly Amazon Prime plan going forward will be priced at Rs 179/- as opposed to the previous price of Rs 129/-, followed by the quarterly plan at Rs 459/- in comparison to the earlier price of Rs 329/-, while the Rs 999/- yearly plan will be priced at Rs 1,499/- instead of Rs 999/-. As of now, there's no word on when the new prices will be applicable and is expected to roll into effect soon. No specific reason has been given for the new price hike in the Amazon Prime subscription plans and the latest announcement could come as a big disappointment for many of its users considering the prices have been increased drastically.

Currently, the Amazon Prime Video membership subscription is cheaper in India than the other streaming services like Netflix, Hotstar and others. Amazon Prime has tasted massive success by releasing a few Tamil films on their platform starting with Suriya's Soorarai Pottru, which skipped a theatrical release last year. Following Soorarai Pottru, Suriya under his 2D Entertainment banner signed a four-picture deal with Amazon Prime among which two have already released, starting with Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum starring Bigg Boss 4 fame Ramya Pandian and Udanpirappe, which has Jyotika and Sasikumar in the lead roles. The two upcoming pictures produced by Suriya to come out next on Amazon Prime will be Jai Bhim premiering on November 2, followed by Oh My Dog, which is awaiting its release date. Apart from Soorarai Pottru, Amazon Prime India also tasted massive success with the period action boxing drama, Sarpatta Parambarai, starring Arya in the lead role under Pa. Ranjith's direction.
