Amazon Prime has announced that the subscription prices will be increased in India from December 13. The e-commerce giant has confirmed the news on its FAQ page informing members that the existing annual Prime annual subscription plan, which is currently priced at Rs 999, will be increased to Rs 1,499. According to the leading on-demand subscription video and over-the-top streaming player, members who subscribe to the Amazon Prime service at a monthly price of Rs 129, will be required to pay Rs 179. There's also a quarterly plan for users around the country at Rs 459 in comparison to the earlier price of Rs 329. This latest announcement will come as a big disappointment for users of the service considering the prices have been increased significantly.

Amazon's support page informs that customers will be automatically charged for the next membership period from the day when the free trial or membership period comes to an end. "Existing Prime members can continue their membership for the duration their membership plan is at the current price. However, after the price change, you can choose to renew your membership at the new price," Amazon has said in a statement. Furthermore, the company has confirmed that customers, who subscribed to Amazon Prime as a part of their telecom plan, will also see a climb in the pricing soon. "Since the launch 5 years ago in IN, Prime has continued to increase the value it offers members. Prime provides an unparalleled combination of shopping, savings and entertainment benefits to make life more convenient and entertaining every single day, and we continue to invest in making Prime even more valuable for customers," the statement read.

The Amazon Prime Video membership subscription in India is currently cheaper in comparison to the other streaming services like Netflix and Hotstar. The company tasted massive success last year with Suriya's Soorarai Pottru, which skipped a theatrical release, and premiered directly on the OTT platform. Suriya's 2D Entertainment banner signed a four-picture deal with Amazon Prime among which three have already been released - Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum, Udanpirappe and Jai Bhim. The final film to be coming out under their collaboration will be Oh My Dog starring Arun Vijay and his son Arnav, with Doctor fame Vinay in a pivotal role. Apart from Soorarai Pottru, the company also released the period action boxing drama, Sarpatta Parambarai, starring Arya in the lead role under Pa. Ranjith's direction. The next big film to be announced for a premiere after its theatrical release will be the Malayalam-language period war drama film Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham starring Mohanlal under Priyadarshan's direction.
