Yesudas wins Swathi Puraskaram

Eminent playback singer K.J. Yesudas has been selected for Kerala Government's highest music award 'Swathi Puraskaram' in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian music, Minister for Culture M.A. Baby told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

Yesudas was selected a jury headed by 'mridangam' maestro Umayalpuram Sivaraman. The award, named after legendary musician and composer Swati Tirunal, comprises Rs. 1 lakh, citation and memento.

The minister also announced that the Kathakali Puraskaram will be presented to Kuroor Valiya Vasudevan Namboodiri and Kalamandalam Gangadharan. The Pallavur Appu Marar Puraskaram will be presented to Edakka exponent Tripunithura Krishnadas and Panchavadyam expert Karavattedathu Narayana Marar. The Nrithya-Natya Puraskaram will be given to Guru Gopalakrishnan and M.P.Parameswara Panicker.
