Director A. L. Vijay had last year directed, Diya, starring Sai Pallavi and Naga Shourya in lead roles and followed it up with the musical dance film, Lakshmi, which had Prabhudeva, Ditya Bhande and Aishwarya Rajesh in starring roles. He is now set to kick-off 2019 on a high note as his two films Watchman and Devi 2 are gearing up for release.

Watchman is a thriller with G. V. Prakash Kumar, Samyuktha Hedge in the lead roles with Yogi Babu and Raj Arjun in supporting roles and is set to hit screens on April 12. Devi 2, a sequel to Devi has Prabhu Deva and Tamannaah reprising their roles from the 2016 film, Devi, with Nandita Swetha, Kovai Sarala, Sathish playing other important roles, which also is gearing up for a release next month.

Meanwhile, A. L. Vijay was announced to be helming the biopic of the Late and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa with the film's title revealed to be as Thalaivi not long back.

Being produced by Vibri Productions and G. V. Prakash Kumar composing the music, there was a hunt for the heroine to play the lead role J. Jayalalithaa. That said, the team has now officially announced Bollywood superstar and National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut will be portraying the role of the former Tamil Nadu CM, which will also be her comeback to Tamil cinema after appearing opposite Jayam Ravi in Dhaam Dhoom in 2008.
