Popular Tamil actress VJ Chitra's death on December 9 shocked the Tamil entertainment industry, including fans, with her husband Hemnath subsequently being arrested by the police on the charges of abetment to suicide. Her death in a hotel room in Chennai's Nazrathpet has since sparked off an intense debate among fans, with an RDO investigation conducted on her family members, Hemnath, her co-artists and others revealing there was no harassment for dowry. It has been widely reported that the Pandian Stores actress had gotten into a number of arguments and disagreements with Hemnath a few days prior to her demise.

As investigations into VJ Chitra's death are still ongoing, the Central Crime Branch on Tuesday issued a new arrest warrant against Hemnath in a medical college seat scam. According to reports, Hemnath had collected an amount of Rs. 1.05 crores rupees, while giving assurances to procure medical seats, with a complaint subsequently being filed by parents of students at the J.J. Nagar police station in Chennai in 2015. The case had since been shifted to the Crime Branch's document and fraud prevention division, with Hemnath being arrested once again and taken for an interrogation from Puzhal Jail where he was imprisoned.

Last week, Chithu's mother had submitted a letter to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister cell demanding a CB-CID enquiry into her daughter's death. VJ Chitra's parents have stated since her death that there needs to be transparency in the investigation of her case. It is to be noted that the post-mortem report of Chitra has mentioned her death to be due to suicide, with Hemnath arrested six days later and is currently imprisoned in Puzhal Jail.

VJ Chitra became a household name across Tamil Nadu after starring in the hit Vijay Television serial Pandian Stores, which is also streaming on the Disney+ Hotstar platform. After Chithu's unexpected death, actress Kaaviya Arivumani had been cast as her replacement to take over  her role as the character Mullai. Chithra's take on Mullai was her biggest role till her death and she garnered a big fanbase, with the young and old alike.
