Tamil Nadu Member of Parliament from Kanyakumari and popular businessman H Vasanthakumar (70) who was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai with COVID-19 passed away on Friday (August 28th). The Congress party leader and businessman who founded Tamil Nadu’s biggest appliances retail chain Vasanth & Co was admitted to Chennai’s Apollo Hospital on August 10th, where he is undergoing treatment for COVID-19. Vasanthakumar was on ECMO and ventilator and health condition was said to be critical earlier in the day.

Vasanthakumar is the founder and chairman of the popular Vasanth & Co, one of the largest retail home appliance chain in Tamil Nadu. Vasanth & Co has over 71 stores across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Bengaluru. He is also the founder and managing director of the Tamil satellite TV channel Vasanth TV. He was elected to Tamil Nadu Assembly from Nanguneri constituency in 2006 election and 2016 election. He is currently elected as the Member of Parliament to the 17th Lok Sabha from Kanyakumari constituency. 

Vasanthakumar was born in Agastheeswaram in Kanyakumari district to Harikrishnan Nadar and Thangammai Ammal on April 14th, 1950. Vasanthakumar is married to Tamilselvi and the couple has two sons Vijay Vasanth, Vinothkumar and a daughter named Thangamalar. Vijay Vasanth is a well-known face in Kollywood following his roles in movies like Chennai 600028, Saroja, Nadodigal, Nanban, Chennai 600028 II, Velaikkaran and many more.
