Understand sensibilities before making films abroad: Karri

Nagendra Karri, the American-based director of Where Are You Sophia?, which figures in the Cinema of the World Section, says his film is based on an item in a local newspaper from the rural town of Highlands.

Karri said his passion for cinema (that made him give up his cushy job as a computer scientist and a six-figure salary in Wall Street to pursue filmmaking) invited the wrath of his mother.

"I like the idea of people working with me rather than for me. If an Indian film-maker is not exposed to international sensibilities, he will not be able to connect to the characters that he sets out to depict in the film, and hence, will not be able to make any headway in world cinema," the genial man concluded.
