Transgender writer Revathy in Thenavettu

Cinema has the capacity to alter people’s beliefs or way of living. Even today, Cinema is a window to the ever-changing world for many. It brings in new fashion, style, ideas, and thoughts. A utopian inclusive society has always been its dream – itdreams of a society with no barriers of colour, caste, creed, religion, socio-economic status or sex. And when we say 'sex', we also include the third gender! Agreed, this part of society has always been the butt ofCinema’s ugliest jokes, buttimes are changing and the upcoming Jiiva-starrer Thenavettu talks about a utopian society where transgenders hold a respectful position.

This Sun Pictures presentation will feature some of the famous transgender personalities of India including Bangalore-based writer Revathy and model Meghna. The film attempts to show them in a new light andgive them a new social status.

Although there is a lot being spoken about Thenavettu and its noble treatment of transgenders, it cannot be construed as “a film about transgenders”. It is a complete action movie abundant in “commercial elements of Kollywood entertainment”. But it also tries to implant an idea that the third gender should be treated with respect and that they are a part of society. This is a unique talent of Kollywood – it entertains you and while doing so, leaves a small social messagesubliminally; it never attempts to be didactic!

This entertainer pairs up Poonam Bajwa (of Seval fame) with Jiiva and is directed by V.V. Kadhir.
