The tragic death of Chennai techie, Subasri, last week has led to a huge backlash from people on social media leading to quick action from the government to issue a crackdown on banners that are erected across Tamil Nadu. Subasri was killed after a wedding banner erected by an AIADMK functionary on the road median had fallen on her leading her to fall off her two wheeler vehicle after which she was run over by a lorry in Pallikaranai near Chennai. Since then, the decision to stop the banner culture has been strong with film stars too issuing orders to their respective fan clubs to avoid engaging in such acts. Likewise, actor Vijay had instructed his fans not to erect banners and hoardings anymore last week which has been met with a positive response. That said, there are now reports stating the Madurai Police have arrested a Vijay fan named Jayakarthik for putting up posters without seeking any prior permission.

Apparently, Jayakarthik had put up the poster wishing Madurai Vijay Fan Club district president Thangapandian on his birthday after which the Sellur Police registered a case on the fan club's district treasurer, Sathishkumar, as well. Reports further state that Jayakarthik has been arrested, while Sathishkumar is said to be on the run. Meanwhile, Justices M Sathyanarayanan and N Seshasayee of a division bench of the Madras High Court had recently slammed political parties for upholding the banner culture despite past court orders saying, "No political party has responded to our notices. We have not come across any party issuing a statement against flex boards,". The incident in Madurai has come as a shock for many with a statement being awaited from Vijay’s side.
