Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on Friday at 1.04 PM after being admitted to the MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai on August 5 for testing COVID-19 positive. The 74-year-old singer's death has stunned the nation altogether with fans sharing their condolences, including celebrities and reputed personalities from various walks of life paying their tributes in memory of the iconic singer. Having shown a steady improvement after undergoing hospital treatment for more than 50 days, the iconic singer turned actor's health worsened on Thursday evening warranting maximum life support. MGM Healthcare in a statement on Friday informed that SPB had tested negative for COVID-19 on September 4, but his condition deteriorated further and he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. SPB is survived by his wife Savithri and two children - daughter Pallavi and son SPB Charan. 

A singer whose songs have been enjoyed by different generations, SP Balasubrahmanyam's death has left many around the country, especially in South India including his fans worldwide in a total state of grief. SPB's voice has been the staple for many aspiring singers over the decades as the veteran has gone on to sing more than 40,000 songs in a glorious career spanning 54 years. Doing a calculation on those numbers, we come to the figures of the legend singing close to 750 songs a year or more 60 songs a month. For a fan to make a list of the best songs sung by SPB would be next to impossible considering the extensive amount of impressive work he has done. His talents have fetched him the National Award on six occasions, while also being conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2011 and Padma Shri in 2001 by the Government of India. A doyen himself, SPB has worked with legendary composers around the country, with his collaboration in Tamil music with MS Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja remaining to be the most prolific of his lifetime. 

With the news of his death still echoing loud, fans are revisiting SPB's songs and have been keeping a close watch on updates on social media. SP Balasubrahmanyam's mortal remains have been currently kept at his residence at Kamdar Nagar near Nungambakkam in Chennai for public homage, with pictures of fans paying their tributes going viral on social media.
