Ponniyin Selvan is a historical Tamil novel written by Kalki. It tells the story of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the Chola king Rajaraja Chola. Kalki took over 3 years to write the script and had even visited Sri Lanka multiple times to gather information about the story.

There have been several attempts to transform Ponniyin Selvan into a film. MGR being one among the first person to test his hands on. But for some, the project did not materialize. Likewise, in 2010, ace director Mani Ratnam had planned to make a film based on Ponniyin Selvan novel but the project was shelved due to budgeting constraints.

Now after all these years, Mani Ratnam is again planning to direct his dream project Ponniyin Selvan. On the other hand, Soundarya Rajinikanth is also planning to adapt the novel into a web-series.

Producer Dhananjayan took to his Twitter space to share a few words about these two upcoming projects – “Puratchi Thalaivar' MGR tried, then our Kamal sir tried. Happy finally it will become a reality as a Magnum opus film by Mani Ratnam sir & as an epic web series  by @soundaryaarajni soon. Best wishes to both. #PonniyinSelvan is the most awaited tale on screen”

When a follower asked Dhananjayan if Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan is really happening, he replied – “100% it's happening is what I know ...let's wait for official announcement”

Actors like Vikram, Simbu, Vijay Sethupathi and Jayam Ravi are in talks to act in Mani Ratnam's version of Ponniyin Selvan which is likely to go on floors later this year or early next year
