Pokkisham: A peek into the past!

Pokkisham, like allCheran movies, is not an extravagant commercial flick but a gentle story, told with as minimum flounces. Keeping it real has been Cheran’s motto right since his directorial debut. The only fantasy element in this movie is the period in which the story takes place. Obviously, ithas takena lot of pains to recreate the past. It goes beyond just the dress and make up styles to establish an era gone by. Hence, a lot of research has gone into the making of this essentially simple story – one of the reasons why (compared to Cheran’s earlier movies) this movie took much longer to make.

The director, who is also the lead player, has showed praise on the hard work put in by his art director. “My art director Vairabalan has made the film look authentic. He has given the film a perfect period look, especially Calcutta of the 70s, which is replete with trams that sported a greenish-cream colour those days. He has also replicated the hand-pulled rickshaws, post office and the telephone exchange, all of which playimportant roles in the film. The hospital set in Madras, currency notes and buses, have also been recreated to give a period look,” says Cheran with pride. He is also generous in his praise for cinematographer Rajesh Yadav’s contribution towards giving the movie the 70s feel through the lighting andcolour correction during the DI.
