After the phenomenal success of Dharma Durai back in 2016, actor Vijay Sethupathi and director Seenu Ramaswamy announced that they would be working on Maamanithan in 2017 itself. Yuvan Shankar Raja not only agreed to produce the film but also brought his legendary father Maestro Ilayaraja on board to score the music along with him. However, The release of the film has been postponed for almost 3 years as the shooting of the film was completed in 2019.

After postponing the film's release numerous times, it was then decided that the film would hit the screens on May 20. But even that release date has taken a hit now and will now be released on June 24 instead. This decision was made because of the potential conflict with Vijay Sethupathi's Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal which is to release later this month on April 28. As a result, the film crew postponed the re-release date as they felt that it would affect the collection of another Vijay Sethupathi film. Another reason for its release by the end of June is because another one of his movies, the Kamal Haasan starrer Vikram, is releasing on June 3. So in order to avoid collision between his movies, the release dates have been spaced out accordingly.

RK Suresh, who has acquired the publishing rights for the film, took to his Twitter handle to make people aware of this news. Sharing an image of the film's poster, he wrote, "Due to continue @VijaySethuOffl movie releases studio9 have changed the release date of mamanithan from may 20 th to June 24 . Mamanithan deserves to hold minimum 400 theatres all over tamilnadu . Our sincere apologies to all theatre owners and distributor. @seenuramasamy"
