Journalist moves Madras High Court against Tamil actors

Last week, Kollywood saw a full-fledged war between journalists and movie actors after the police arrested a news editor of Dinamalar, a leading Tamil daily, for publication of a news report (based on the police statement given by actress Bhuvaneswari), carrying names and photos of leading actors in Tamil cinema allegedly involved in prostitution.

The latest information on this conflict between journalists and actors is that a senior journalist has moved the Madras High Court on Monday demanding action against Tamil actors for their alleged derogatory and defamatory statements against journalists and their families on October 8.

V. Anbazhagan, president of the Chennai Union of Journalists (CUJ), said that various journalist bodies, including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), had deplored the arrest of the news editor and filed a complaint with the city police to take action against six actors namely Vivek, Sripriya, Vijayakumar, Sathyaraj, Arun Kumar and Suriya who spoke derogatively about journalists and their family members.

No action has been taken so far though a petition has been filed, Anbazhagan said. The case is expected to come up for hearing on Tuesday and the CD containing the speeches made by the six actors at the South India Film Artistes' Association (SIFAA), popularly known as Nadigar Sangam meeting, will be played to the judge. The journalists have also decided to send defamation notices to the actors.
