Netflix is facing a backlash by a section of people in India over a recent Telugu film Krishna and his Leela which allegedly hurts the sentiments of the Hindus. A hashtag #BoycottNetflix has also been trending since today morning. Krishna and His Leela is a romantic Telugu film, directed by Ravikanth Perepu and produced by Suresh Productions, Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Reddy. It features Siddu Jonnalagadda, Shraddha Srinath, Seerat Kapoor and Shalini Vadnikatti in the lead roles. This is Ravikanth Perepu's second film after 2016 mystery-thriller Kshanam. The music was composed by Sricharan Pakala. The film was released directly on 25 June 2020 on Netflix. Krishna and his Leela talks about a young man who is torn between his past and present girlfriends, a confused bachelor’s indecisiveness spins a web of lies and cheating as he struggles to commit.

The male of the film is called Krishna who is seen having sexual encounters with several women and one of them being named Radha. Using names of Hindu deities in a movie with erotic content has irritated a section of people who have now started to protest against Netflix on social media. People claim that it is an insult to their religion and call for censorship in the OTT platform. Though this issue could turn very serious in the near future, for the time being people are using this controversy to spread fun memes and gain publicity through this issue. However, some tweets do tell us how angry people are against Netflix. Here are some of them. The Hindu Jagruti Organisation says - “We all should #BoycottNetflix as @netflix & @NetflixIndia are indulging is promoting Hinduphobic content via web series like Sacred Games, Leila, Ghoul, Delhi Crime etc. Its recent web series #KrishnaAndHisLeela has tried to insult highly revered Hindu Gods - Shrikrishna & Radha.”

Paritush Choudhury from Assam says - “Web Series #KrishnaAndHisLeelaOnNetflix showing #Krishna have sexual affairs with many women & one of them named as #Radha. The audacity to openly target #Hinduism wth lies, deceit, propaganda Why always insult our Gods? Because @NetflixIndia is Hinduphobic. #BoycottNetflix.” Sinchana MK Gowda says - “NOW THERE WILL BE NO MORE TOLERANCE How dare you @NetflixIndia to create series from our money only against our own FAITH.......??? To kill one's faith is a big crime than to kill one individual Zero tolerance against ANTINATIONAL( ANTIHINDUISM)....... #BoycottNetflix.”

There are also a lot of memes in Hindi which makes fun of the overall situation. Most people are still clueless about why Netflix has been trending on Twitter. But a Telugu film gaining the attention of the entire nation is probably what the makers would have wanted.
