Just yesterday it was announced that 28 films had been shortlisted for the final round of selection to become India's official entry for the Academy Awards for this year. It came to light that 3 Tamil movies - Dhanush's Vada Chennai, Vijay Sethupathi's Super Deluxe and R Parthiban's Oththa Seruppu Size 7, were also among this list. These 28 movies also included Ranveer Singh's breakaway hit Gully Boy. Today, it has been announced that Gully Boy would indeed be India's official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards.

Gully Boy, directed by Zoya Akthar and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Zoya and Farhan Akthar under the Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby Productions banners, released on 14th February, 2019! This musical drama revolves around the lives of aspiring rapper Murad, his girlfriend Safeena (Alia Bhatt), friend MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedhi) and Sky (Kalki Koechlin). This movie was made on a budget of Rs. 84 Crores and grossed over Rs. 230 Crores across the world. Gully Boy became the 4th highest grosser of this year in Bollywood and also the highest overseas grosser.

This movie, which went on floors in January 2018, was wrapped up by April of the same year. It was first screened at the Berlin Film Festival, on 9th February, 2019. The response was tremendous and the movie's catchline - 'Apna Time Aayega' (Our time will come) went viral. This is indeed a prestigious recognition for director Zoya Akthar as earlier her web-series Inside Edge was also nominated for the Emmy Awards. Let's hope Gully Boy wins an Oscar and makes our country proud!
