The spotlights on the stage, dreamy sequences, supermodels strutting down the runway and posing confidently for the photographers - a lot of effort goes in to pull off a perfect fashion show. The unseen face that puts everything together and makes it look 'Oh-So-Perfect' on the runway is the Fashion Choreographer, the backbone of any fashion show. In a candid chat with Galatta Cinema, Priya Manikandan, the most sought-after fashion choreographer and stylist from Chennai, talks about her life and career in the fashion industry.

1. When and how did start your journey in the fashion industry?

My father was one of the pioneers in the fashion circuit in Chennai. So I grew up watching the industry and I always wanted to be a part of it. My first show was way back in 1998 and there was no looking back since then. There was a brief hiatus after my marriage and children, but now I'm back to work.

2. Were there any challenges at that point of time?

In those days, we did not have many people to handle an event. We had to single-handedly put the event together and ensure it was a success. We had to take care of the stage, lights, sound, ramp and models - all by ourselves. It was challenging to co-ordinate everything and ensure that we delivered our best.

3. How has the fashion scene evolved in Chennai since then?

Chennai's fashion market has been growing and evolving dramatically. The concept of designer clothes came in as a refreshing break from the usual ritual of buying readymade garments off the racks. Today, people love to go to their favourite designer and customize outfits for themselves.

4. About your recent & current projects?

Recently I had choreographed for an event organized by Bhoomika trust, to raise funds for the Chennai floods. The event was co-ordinated by Suhasini and ace actor Amitabh Bachchan inaugurated the show. We had actress Khushbu, Lissy, Vani Ganapathy, Jayashree, Lakshmi Manchu, dancers Priyadarsini Govind, Krithika Subramaniam walking the ramp. Among the other current events, I have an international pageant and an expo planned for June-July this year. I'm the fashion director and I'm really looking forward to be a part of it.

5. From your experience in the fashion world... What's your advice for the upcoming fashion stylists and choreographers out there?

Put your heart and soul into whatever you're doing and never compromise!
