United States President Donald Trump on Monday (US standard time) threatened to freeze funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) permanently unless "substantive improvements were made within the next 30 days". In a four-page letter, Trump highlighted the reason for suspended payments to the WHO since mid-April while alleging the world health governing body had aligned with China and aided in the covering up as well as the mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected over 4 million people and has left more than 300,000 dead around the globe.

Trump took to his Twitter page on Monday to tweet the four-page letter he sent to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus calling it "self-explanatory". The US President in his letter states the failings of the WHO in addressing the pandemic with less urgency while also not accusing them of not paying heed to the emergence of the COVID-19 virus in its early stages including being close to China. "It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world. The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China," Trump said in the letter.

He further went on to state, "If the World Health Organization does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization,". Earlier in the day, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus admitted to the flaws by the WHO and told a virtual assembly that an independent review of the response to the coronavirus outbreak is welcomed.
