C.V. Sridhar passes away

C.V. Sridhar, a legendary South Indian writer, director and producer, who made a series of commercially successful films in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, passed away on Monday.

Sridhar's entry into the film industry was as a dialogue writer when his play 'Ratha Pasam' (1954) was adapted as a film. Having established himself as a scriptwriter, he made his debut as director in 1959 with Kalyana Parisu, which deals with a love triangle, two women vying for the same man. This film, starring Gemini Ganesh, Saroja Devi and Vijayakumari in the lead, turned to be a huge box-office hit.

In 1961, he started his own production company called Chitralaya. Thein Nilavu, starring Gemini Ganesh in the lead, was the first film from Chitralaya. Later, he debuted in Bollywood with Raj Kapoor starrer Nazrana in 1961 and remade some of his super hits (for instance Kadalikka Neramillai as Pyaar Kiye Jaa). His other well-known Hindi films are Dil Ek Mandir (1963) and Gehri Chaal (1973). Sridhar also made his presence felt in Kannada and Telugu.

In all his films, he used the stars, melodrama and melodious songs combination. In 1962, Sridhar won Filmfare Award for the Best Story for his Nazrana (1961). In 1964, he was nominated for the Filmfare Awards for the Best Director and Best Story for his Dil Ek Mandir (1963).

His other memorable movies include Nenjil Ore Alayam (1962), Kadalikka Neramillai (1964), Seeta Geeta Datithe (1977), Azhage Unnai Aarathikkirean (1979), Prema Sangamam (1984) and Yaro Ezhuthia Kavithai (1986).
