Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron’s Avatar went on to receive one of the biggest distinctions in the history of world cinema by going on to become the highest-grossing film in the world with over $2.7 billion in global box office collections upon its release in 2009.

Ten years on, there is still massive excitement for the sequel, Avatar 2, which was initially planned for a release on December 18, 2020 and has now been officially postponed to come out in theatres across the world on December 17, 2021.

The upcoming epic science fiction film will see the lead pair Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprising their roles alongside Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh, who have now come on board.

The news was made official by Walt Disney Studios who have acquired all properties related to the Avatar franchise with Avatar 3 coming out on December 23, 2022, followed by Avatar 4 planned for a December 19, 2025 release, and Avatar 5 on December 17, 2027.

Despite coming in as a disappointing news for Avatar fans everywhere, we can be sure James Cameron will have planned an epic visual feast when the sequel arrives on screens next year.
