Aamir Khan in Chennai

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who seems to have taken a liking to Tamil and Tamilians since he began acting in Hindi version of Ghajini directed by Murugadoss, will be in Chennai on August 12th. The reason: To receive the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Award bestowed upon him for directing Taare Zameen Par, a film about a dyslexic boy and his compassionate teacher. It is to be noted that seldom does Aamir Khan attend award functions or film-related functions. Therefore it can be said that the actor’s newfound fascination and respect for Tamil Nadu and its culture ever since he began interacting with director A. Murugadoss has encouraged him to come here to receive this award.

Taare Zameen Par is the first Hindi film to win this prestigious award, which was started 11 years ago by Maruthi Rao in memory of his son Gollapudi Srinivas, an energetic director who accidentally drowned in the sea while making his debut film. The award honours deserving directors and has a lot of value attached to it.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakhs and a memento.

Trivia: A few months ago, Aamir Khan stated in an interview that he prefers reading Chennai edition (online) of The Hindu newspaper!
