164 films to be screened at IFFK
As many as 164 films in 11 sections will be screened at eight theatres in the 14th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) which begins in Thiruvananthapuram on December 11, Kerala Culture and Education Minister M.A. Baby told mediapersons on Thursday. The Turkish film A Step into Darkness directed by Atil Inaq, will be the inaugural film. The competition section has 14 entries, including two Malayalam films.
The films of Mexican director Arthur Ripstein, Japanese film-maker Mikio Naruse, French film-maker Jacques Tati, Italian director Fransesco Rossi, Mrinal Sen and Lohitadas will be screened in the retrospective section. In the contemporary world cinema section, 11 films including those of Haitian director Raoul Peck will be screened.
Two sections featuring the contemporary cinema of Africa and Cuba have been included in the festival. Eight films that have been termed as milestones of French new wave cinema and the films of seven debutant directors also form part of the festival. This section also includes Pazhassi Raja and the Tamil film Pokisham. Seven films each will be screened in the contemporary Indian cinema and the Malayalam cinema sections.
The homage section will have films of Madhavikutty, Shobana Parameswaran Nair, Murali, Rajan P. Dev, K.P. Thomas and Adoor Bhavani. The best film will get a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh and golden crow pheasant award. About 4,500 persons have registered as delegates so far. The last date for registration is December 5. The registration fee for general delegates is Rs. 300 and students Rs. 200.
