Kochi lacks facilities: Directors

With an increasing number of Malayalam movies being shot in and around Kochi, the city is gradually becoming a film city! For instance, recent movies like Pranayam, Chappa Kurish and City of God were shot in the city.

However, some leading directors are of the opinion that Kochi still needs to go a long way before it can be called self-sufficient for filmmaking. Veteran Shaji Kailas pointed out that there are very few shooting floors in the city and some locations required for film shoots come at a steep rent.

"The film association should take initiatives to help the film fraternity so that guest houses and special sets are priced low," said Kailas. "Government support is vital in making sets and venues more easily available in the city," he added.

Director Lal Jose agreed with Kailas that there are not enough film floors and printing labs in the city even though it has emerged as the favourite haunt of filmmakers. He said that with more and more films being shot in Kochi, the government should talk to directors, producers and cameramen and make police stations, airport and railway stations available for film shoots.
