Banaras from today

Director Nemam Pushparaj's much-awaited film Banaras, set in the backdrop of India's religious capital Banaras, releases today in nearly 28 centres across the state. Banaras, which has been dragging for more than six months, has Vineeth as Hari, a research student on folk dances; Kavya Madhavan plays the role of Amritha, a classical dancer. Though classically trained, this is the first time in her career that she is playing the role of a dancer.

Banaras is one of the last movies of Kavya Madhavan, who got married to Nischal Chandra two months ago. It revolves around Hari, only son of a Malayalee professor who had been teaching in Banaras University. Born in Banaras, Hari was brought to his father's native place in Kerala after the death of his mother in childbirth. Later, his father married another woman.

His parents want Hari to marry his niece Devu who is in love with him, but Hari's ambition is to return Banaras for higher studies in folk dance. In Banaras, he meets a classical dancer Amritha during a function conducted by a Malayalee association. They become friends and eventually fall in love.

Produced by M.R. Nair under the banner of Kashi films, the film gives equal importance to music. M. Jayachandran has set music to lyrics written by Giresh Puthencherry. Camera is handled by M. Sukumar. The other cast members include Jagathy Sreekumar, Nedumudi Venu, Devan, Bineesh Kodiyeri, Harisree Asokan and Suraj Vejaramoodu. Scripted by Cheriyaan Kalpakavaady, Banaras is brought to theatres by Minerva Release.
