The long battle of right v/s wrong, correct v/s incorrect, offensive v/s polite, real v/s unreal ends… Udta Punjab spreads its wings and sets on a free ride. After a continuous struggle with CBFC and other politically correct organizations the controversial film hit the theatres worldwide. Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Dilijit Dosanjh are playing lead roles in the movie. The crime drama film is directed by Abhishek Chaubey and Balaji Motion Films and Phantom Films co-produced Udta Punjab.
Udta Punjab revolves around the drug issue prevailing in Punjab. The story is narrated through the different lives of these four characters – Tommy Gabru Singh (Shahid Kapoor), Pinky Kumari alias Mary Jane (Alia Bhatt), Dr Preet Sahani (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Sartaj Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) . Gabru is a rebellious rockstar with a scintillating lifestyle. His producers are constantly miffed with him and lose many recordings because of his attitude and he gets arrested by Punjab police for getting involved in drugs.
Pinky Kumari is an outstanding hockey player who shifts from Uttar Pradesh to Punjab for survival purpose. She becomes a laborer to earn a living. One day a 3 kg drug packet catches her attention and she decides to sell it make some fancy money. In the end her principles stop her and she throws the entire packet into a well. Preet and Sartaj began their mission to expose the drug mafias! The rest of the story forms in how each one of these finding answers to their lost identities and beliefs!
The Ishqiya fame director Abhishek Chaubey brings us a mysterious film with only dark shades in it. The various plots in the story get tangled and gives a tinge of complicated at one point. Otherwise Abhishek succeeds in narrating a genuine story with real characters.
Abhishek is very lucky to have performers who have owned the roles and performed so fantastically. For Shahid or Alia it was not the regular kind of roles they do. They had to move out of the comfort zone and perform and they nailed it. Kareena and Diljit also gave stunning performances.
Music and background score play a vital role in defining the mood of the film. Amit Trivedi’s 'Chiita Ve' and 'Ikk Kudi' communicate the theme of the film in the most effective manner.
Overall Udta Punjab is for the free spirited and open minded folks. It is making a unadulterated effort to have a real conversation! Go for it!
