Iconic Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor's cremation took place at the Chandanwadi Crematorium in Mumbai around 4PM as the nation amidst the nationwide lockdown. The late actor's son, Ranbir Kapoor, carried the hearse from the HN Reliance Hospital to the Chandanwadi Crematorium in Marine Lines, Mumbai, where close members of his family were present alongside several notable and top names from the Hindi film industry with pictures from the last rites ritual now doing the rounds on social media.

Owing to the nationwide lockdown, the city of Mumbai had worn a deserted look and couldn't bit a proper farewell to one of the city's most adored actors of yesteryear with only 20 people being allowed to attend the funeral and cremation among whom included the Kapoors and close friends of the family. Among the family members of Rishi Kapoor, the late actor's wife Neetu Kapoor, sister Rima Jain, Manoj Jain, Armaan Jain, Aadar Jain, Anisha Jain, Rajeev Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan were present. Other notable names included Abhishek Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Dr Tarang, Ayan Mukerji, Jai Ram, Rohit Dhawan and Rahul Rawail. The hearse was led by Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir Kapoor as girlfriend Alia Bhatt followed in her car. Rishi Kapoor's daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahni was not able to attend the cremation owing to the nationwide lockdown and is expected to reach Mumbai only on Friday. A special pass has been sought from the police by Riddhima, who will be driving down from Delihi to Mumbai later today.

Known for his dashing looks, versatile acting and dance skills, Rishi Kapoor breathed his last on Thursday morning at the HN Reliance Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. The Kapoor family had in a message addressed to the people of the nation ealier today requested everyone to adhere to the lockdown rules in places saying Rishi Kapoor "would not have it any other way,".

The statement is as follows: "Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8.45 am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff said he kept them entertained to the last. He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him."

The Kapoors in their statement further added, "He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears. In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force. He would not have it any other way."
