Nandanam Signal back to the old traffic diversions for a week - Daily news

Chennai: From Wednesday for a week, the recently opened four-way signal at Nandanam will revert to the traffic routing it was following during the CMRL construction period, officials have said. The signal leads to T Nagar, Saidapet, Nungambakkam and Cenotaph Road.

The Nandanam signal, which has been a two-way road for some time now, had been open to four-way traffic earlier this month. The four-way lane was closed down to facilitate the construction of the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL).

According to the Times of India, the incoming traffic from Venkatanarayana Road, T Nagar, will have to turn into the Burkit Road on the left or Venkatanarayana Road on the right, in order to get to the Anna Salai. This is how the signal had operated during the SMRL construction period from 2012 to 2019. While four-way traffic was reinstated in July, 2018, it has been causing massive traffic jams that have been delaying vehicular movement also on the nodal Anna Salai.

commuters during peak hours. In fact, the traffic near the Muthuramalinga Thevar statues spills on to the neighbouring colonies that motorists use as a short-cut to approach the Nandanam signal.
However, some attribute the long wait at the signal to the Chennai Traffic Police barring the right turn on Cenotaph Road. Currently, the vehicles approaching Anna Salai from the Cenotaph Road have to take a left towards the Nandanam signal. Earlier, they could turn right and move on towards the Gemini flyover.
