These are difficult times indeed, for the whole world! All the countries are battling the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic, which has claimed thousands of lives and is still raging unabated! However, there are quite a few other issues too, which some countries are facing. Recently, France has been in the centre of quite a few headlines, including the re-imposition of the nation-wide lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID; the savage terrorist attack stabbings inside a church and also the sudden surge in terrorist activities on French soil! The beginning point for all this was the depiction of Prophet Mohammed as a caricature. This was followed by the brutal murder of teacher Samuel Paty and it was responded to with an aggressive response by the French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron expressed outrage against the radical Islamist terrorism and called it out in a statement, which was echoed by the French citizens too. This in turn, caused a huge geopolitical ripple with leaders of a number of Islamic countries expressing their dissent over President Macron. Turkish President Recep Tayyep Erdogan came out with a scathing statement against Macron and stated, "The person in charge of France has lost his way. He goes on about Erdogan all day. Look at yourself first and where you are going. He is a case and he really must be checked up." This was followed by Turkey launching a strong campaign to boycott all French products. Turkey's decision was backed by Pakistan with their Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeting that Macron had been encouraging Islamophobia and had been attacking the religion, rather than the terrorists. He went on to add that Macron had been deliberately provoking Muslims, including French citizens. Pakistanis had also gotten many "Bocott French products" hashtags to trend on social media.
However, Macron responded to all this and stated that France would never give in but always respect all differences in a spirit of peace. Amidst all this, for quite some time now, Turkey has been trying to establish themselves as the leader of the Islamic world, trying to displace Saudi Arabia. This latest decision to be the motivating force behind targetting France and branding their President Macron as being Islamophobic and eventually calling for the boycotting of French goods, is also being seen as yet another effort by Turkey to assume a leadership position amongst the Islamic countries. However, Saudi Arabia has now stepped in and supported France, as has the supreme body of Muslim countries - the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC). It condemned the brutal killing of Samuel Paty and also the depiction of Prophet Mohammed in caricatures. Now, Saudi has been boycotting Turkish goods and replacing them with Greek goods. However, this movement has not been launched by the Saudi government but by the people of Saudi Arabia, themselves! This sure is set to escalate into a huge geopolitical divide. Stay tuned for updates...
