In recent times, Russia has been in the news, very often! After hitting the headlines for registering the world's first COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, Russia was in the news again when the Deputy Prime Minister was confirmed to have been infected by the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus! Then, reports of Russia being snubbed by the USA over offers to help with a COVID vaccine's development, again made the headlines. Now, it has come to light that the leader of Russia's opposition, 44-year-old Alexei Navalny has been hospitalised and has slipped into a coma, after alleged poisoning!

A staunch anti-corruption campaigner and opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin - Navalny was travelling from Tomsk to Moscow, when he fell ill on the flight. The plane was immediately diverted to Omsk and made an emergency landing there, with doctors rushing him to hospital and later informing that he had slipped into a coma and that they were battling to save his life. Alexei Navalny's spokeswoman has said that he is currently unconscious at the hospital and that the doctors suspect poisoning. A report states Alexei Navalny's team of suspecting something was mixed into his tea, at an airport cafe.

The Kremlin has issued a statement wishing Mr. Navalny a "speedy recovery". It is well known that for years, Alexei Navalny has been one of Putin's strongest critics. Earlier this year, in June, Navalny had described a constitutional reform allowing an additional two terms of office for Putin after having already completed 4 terms, as a "coup" and a violation of the constitution. Many top leaders from countries across the world have expressed their concern over Navalny's alleged poisoning and have been sending across their wishes for him to get well soon. The statement by Navalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh states, "During the flight, he felt ill. The plane made an urgent landing in Omsk. Alexei has toxic poisoning. We suspect that Alexei was poisoned by something mixed into [his] tea. It was the only thing he drank since morning. Doctors are saying that the toxic agent absorbed faster through the hot liquid. Right now Alexei is unconscious." There are also allegations that though the doctors were initially forthcoming with their analysis, they are now stalling for time and not sharing any updates. Navalny's wife and personal doctor have both reached the hospital and are seeking to transfer him to a special poison control centre in Europe.
