The entire world sat back and took notice when a group of people attacked the prison in Afghanistan's Jalalabad, on Sunday evening! This attack came a day after reports came out of Afghan Special Forces personnel killing a senior Islamic State commander, near Jalalabad! The attack which started on Sunday evening and only ended after the last of the 11 member team that attacked the prison was killed, taking the number of casualties to 29 including the attackers, prisoners, civilians, guards and Afghan Security Force members! The attack saw a suicide bomber driving up to the entrance of the prison in a truck loaded with explosives and denotating it there. The rest of his team members fought with the security personnel and helped a number of prisoners escape!

A statement released by the Afghan Defence Ministry claimed that the 29 dead included 11 of the attackers and 2 security personnel with five prisoners being killed and about 1,025 of them being rescued by the attackers! Shortly after the attack ended on Monday, the Islamic State's local wing called Khorasan Province (ISKP) released a 20-minute audio statement, claiming that they had carried out the attack! The group's spokesman Sultan Aziz Azzam provided the complete details of the attack. He stated that a 11-member IS team divided into 4 groups carried out the attack and mentioned that the team had 3 Indians, four Tajiks, three Afghans and a Pakistani! This attack was to keep up the promise of the new ISKP chief Shahab al-Mujahir, to release all IS prisoners being held in the Jalalabad prison! 

Photo evidences show that the leader of the attack - the suicide bomber was one of the 3 Indians and was an Islamic State operative with Kerala's Kasargod being his hometown. Dr. Ijas Kallukettiya Purayil, his wife and minor child were part of a group of 22 Keralites who left India to Afghanistan join the Islamic State, in 2016! India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has earlier filed a case against Dr. Ijas on charges of criminal conspiracy, commission of unlawful activities and membership & support to the banned IS! The NIA had listed Ijas's status as absonding, on their official website. Dr. Ijas's wife Reffeala is currently help captive in Kabul's Badam Bagh Prison, along with their 5-year-old son and another girl child born after they moved to Afghanistan. Reffeala was captured along with 24 other Indians among 900 other Islamic State fighters, in November 2019! An NIA team was supposed to go to Kabul to question her earlier this year but were unable to do so, due to the cancellation of international flights. Stay tuned for further updates...
